Question 1 In this class we learned about how artists use symbolism to express important concepts of artwork, like Ali Wei Wei and the backpacks. Answer the questions about your use of symbolism in paragraph form. Include images of your artwork to support your answers. A. What did you learn or understand about the ways artists use symbols before taking this class? Did you use symbolism in your own work before we covered it? Before this class,I didn't really know much about symbolism and how artists use it to express important concepts. I understood that symbols were used to represent something, but I didn't realize how much it could impact artwork. Our teacher showed us some examples of artwork where symbolism was used and I thought the art was great and had a powerful message. I learned that there is so much you can say through artwork and symbolism. There is also many ways it can be expressed through someone's work. I think that I did use symbolism in my artwork before we covered it, I just didn't realize it. I was putting my feels into some of my artwork, and even the sketches I would do. In some sketches I would do, I would write things down and just draw. I learned that you can express your feelings through symbolism. B. How has you understanding of the use of symbolism in art changed? Explain how you've used symbolism in your artwork, include what symbols you used and why. My understanding of symbolism in art has changed because I have more knowledge of symbolism. Symbolism is something people use to express their emotions. They use it in artwork to express how they feel about a certain topic or just how the feel in general. Artists will use different objects in their art to help them get the symbolism in the artwork to standout. In my artwork I use symbolism by representing how i feel, whether it was in my final project or my sketches, but i also have artwork that does not represent symbolism as well. Question 2 A. What are some important things you learned from Art 1? In Art 1, I learned a lot about art. I learned how to do certain things correctly. I learned about cool things you can do with watercolor to get different textures and colors. I learned how to work with clay. I learned some basic things you need to learn about art as well. I learned a lot about shading and value in a drawing. Overall, I just thought this class was very helpful and fun. I liked how we weren't just focused on drawings, we painted, worked with clay, built things, etc .You don't need to be good at drawing to take art, you just need to be creative and like art. B. What would you add or change to make it a better learning experience. I enjoyed the class a lot, I would probably add more things to learn, because its fun learning new things.Like when we had the stations with different things to do at them, during the artists explore unit. |

This is my self portrait drawing, done by myself. It is me as a zombie. Most of this drawing was created when i was in Mexico, so i didn't have the advantage of having Ms. Rossi's help for it. But i am still happy with how it turned out. I think i struggled with the value the most didn't want to go to dark and i didn't want to have the drawing be too light. I think i should go back and add more darker values to this drawing to make it look better. There is a lot of line movement n the hair. The drawing takes up most of the paper, there really isn't any empty space except for the top right of the drawing. I think i should have also added more value to the face. The drawing is me at a angle, i choose this since my reference picture was like this. There is a lot of repetition of lines in the hair, which took a while to complete. Some points of emphasis in my work are the eyes and the injuries on the forehead and neck, i think those are all very eye catching, and its one of the first things you see when you look at the drawing. The expression in the original picture was serious, so i took that expression and tried to make it scary somehow. I tried to capture that scariness of a zombie. My drawing reminds me of the show 'The Walking Dead', because that show is about zombie and i drew a zombie. That is were i got the inspiration to draw a zombie, was from the show the walking dead. I believe this work is original because it was myself and then i took elements of a zombie. I think it was overall a success, when i look at the picture i see a lot of mistakes, some that some people wouldn't even notice. I think i need to go back and add more darker values.
Elliot Walker is a London-based artist who uses molten glass to create a variety of sculpture. The dark outer surface contrasts with the vibrant interior of his work. I really like Walker's work because of the contrast of colors in his work, also i think his work is unique. In these space-based Michael Kagan celebrates the man made object-- machinery. In paint these large works, Kagan used thick strokes that are deliberate and unique, showing aggression in his application of the oil paint. This exhibition was titled "Thunder in the Distance", and was showcased last year at Joshua Linear Gallery. |
